December 7th, PITT MEADOWS, B.C. – COHA-ACHO’s President today expressed appreciation for the efforts led by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister Marie Claude-Bibeau to retroactively improve the payouts available to Canadian farmers under the Agri-Stability program.
The proposed change, now under negotiation with the Provinces, is welcome news for our sector of agriculture. “COHA-ACHO identified the need for improvements in the Agri-Stability program back in April when the impact of COVID-19 was becoming increasingly serious,” said President Dave Captein. “We are very appreciative that the federal Government is leading the effort to introduce enhancements to the program that will take effect in 2020.”
“We urge the provincial partners of the federal government to come to an agreement soon so that this positive step can be implemented to benefit farmers all across Canada,” commented COHA-ACHO’s President.
Earlier this year, COHA-ACHO undertook its own analysis of the limitations of the Agri-Stability program on farmers in our sector of agriculture impacted by losses arising from COVID-19. That analysis showed the importance of making the kind of changes that are being proposed.
